My Name came out this year on Netflix, its
Netflix’s own production. The series was highly anticipated among K-Drama Fans
due to Kim So Hee lead actress of the series. Kim So Hee in the past has played
very typical roles but still managed to mark her as one the most praised
actress in Korean Industries. Her role in this series was very different from
what one would expect her to undertake which created a lot of buzz. The series
starts following a loner female student going about her day, experiencing high school
bullying, and having cops waiting outside her house expecting her father to visit
her as her father is the most wanted gangster.
The story really starts when the fathers visit his on her birthday and ends up dying at the door, while the girl is on the other side of the door. He gets murdered in cold blood as his daughter watches it through peephole on the door. This scene was the most appreciated as the murder and crying of the daughter was shot at separate timings in different shots but even tough the actress was able to capture the emotions of a being a teenager who witnessed murder of her own father.
Later during the funeral, a suspicious man with a whole bunch of other gangster walks in to pay respects to the deceased claimed to know her father and that they were as close as brothers walks in with tears in his eyes captivates the audience even more. This suspicious man called Mujin played by one the renowned acter Park Hee Soon has its own fan based as the actor is very well known to play some of the most legendary gangster role in Korean Film Industry. Hence his entrance and meeting Jiwoo(Kim So hee) at her father funeral was another scene which brought in wow factor and raising the expectations even more, And were these expectations meet or was it only a hype? Let’s find out
In my view it did justice to all the buzz and
expectations it created as Jiwoo takes on a journey to take revenge of her father’s
death which leads to more than action sequences I could count but each action
scene delivered very well. Jiwoo get trained under Mujins in his Gym which trains
all his subordinates to fight before they can really start working. This gym
was male dominant as there was not even a single female in the gym. Jiwoo did
face a lot of criticism but not only that she even faced some extreme verbal harassment
and a rape attempt but still she stood the ground and won the annual fight held
by the gym. She really worked hard to be stronger not just mentally but physically
to, she had a clear vision in her mind.
Later in the series a twist which we weren’t expecting
takes place as Jiwoo gets instructed to join police after passing out from the
gym by Mujin to be able to take revenge. Where she meets Ahn Bo-hyun played by
another big-name Jeon Pil-do a fellow officer during a crime investigation which
overlapped by a narcotics sting operation lead by Ahn Bo-hyun which leads to a unbreakable
bond.
Jiwoo works hard to get transferred to the narcotics
department as the clue she had and what little evidence she retrieved from the
crime scene of her father leads to this division of police. She keeps on
playing spy for Mujin and saving him from unexpected inspections by informing earlier.
But does she find the killer? does she get her revenge? after all this hard
work well watch it to find out.
In my view the series was what it promised to be.
It’s totally a one timer as its episodes end on such an interesting note that
one can’t stop watching. Worth bingeing series with twist, turns and jaw
dropping action sequences.
